Various issues, pros, cons, and opinions surrounding the use of marijuana have been spinning around our culture since the 1930's . A low budget film released in 1936, Reefer Madness, was meant as a propaganda film to warn parents about the dangers of smoking grass. In the 1960's, the popular weed surfaced again as a very popular past time for college kids, who referred to themselves as hippies. States have battled and outlawed marijuana ever since. Now, two states have legalized marijuana for recreational use, while other states have allowed medicinal marijuana use for some time now. The list of users, non-users, and those fighting for, or against marijuana includes many celebrities and famous people. Celebrities around the world are not about to give up their past time of rolling joints anytime soon.
There are so many opinions regarding grass and whether it should be legal or not. As many celebs are on the legalization bandwagon, it is time to take a look and find out what they really think.
Legendary comedian Rodney Dangerfield (81) has been a longtime fan of marijuana without any regrets. Dangerfield has suffered from chronic pain from angina for a very long time, and believes that marijuana relieves the pain better than any prescription or other painkillers .
In 2006, Director Oliver Stone, signed an ad legalizing medicinal marijuana, and was supported by dozens of religious leaders along with over 300 elected politicians in 42 states, and tons of celebrity friends including Bill Maher, Richard Pryor, Walter Cronkite, Hugh Downs, Susan Sarandon, and Tim Robbins. Mr. Stone was arrested numerous times for possession, and eventually chose to enter rehab vs spending time in jail. He is still big fan of toking!
Film star and well known celebrity, Ed Harris, said pot changed his life! He was a football captain in high school, and never partook in any form of drugs. Once he entered Columbia, and joined the Students for a Democratic Society, he experimented with marijuana. He claims he started seeing things in a different light, and realized it was time to do something different with his life. He said pot led him to acting career!
Chevy Chase, comedian and star of the original Saturday Night Live, has written more jokes surrounding weed than even he can remember. One joke basically said the FBI referred to grass as killer weed, causing death by laughter, and he urged his viewers to send their supply directly to him!
Tim Robbins, director, actor, and writer is a long time supporter of cannabis. Both Robbins, and his wife, Susan Sarandon, are very politically active in the war to legalize marijuana nationwide.
Brad Pitt, on the other hand, has sworn off grass; claiming it was like living in a semester of depression. His good friend, Matt Damon, said the first time he toked was with his mother and stepfather, when he was 16 years old, and has remained grateful.
While politically involved in California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, had tongues flapping when he openly stated he was pro-marijuana. As Governor, he worked to lower the fines and punishments for possession of one ounce or less of grass.
Montel Williams has suffered from multiple sclerosis for over 15 years, and has used his celebrity status to educate people regarding the medicinal benefits of smoking grass. He speaks volumes regarding Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and his support for marijuana as a medicinal aid for many who suffer from debilitating chronic illnesses.
Malcolm X, Civil Rights Activist , born in 1925 and assassinated in 1965, wrote how he sold weed on the road, and said "nobody had ever heard of a traveling reefer peddler.";
Carl Sagan, scientist, author, and Pulitzer Prize winner, had written about his experiences with weed under the name of Professor X. Years after his death, intellectual Lester Grinspoon revealed that Professor X was Carl Sagan.
Grinspoon's 10 year old son was diagnosed with leukemia in 1967. Lester heard about a treatment using cannabis, and began administering weed to his son to help eliminate the horrible side effects of chemotherapy. His son, Danny, continued using cannabis for the next year and a half before he passed away. Through Lester and Danny's involvement with marijuana, it is believed they played a major part in the beginning research to study marijuana for eliminating nausea in chemo patients.
Willie Nelson, country singer, and writer, has been a huge fan of marijuana for more years than most of us have been alive! This legend is now 80 years old, and going strong!
Late legend comedian, George Carlin, said he would take a drag from time to time, putting it mildly.
Tony Curtis, Johnny Depp, Jon Stewart, Dave Chappelle, and the list goes on and on regarding celebrities and dads who are big fans of the famous, very debatable plant known as marijuana, weed, cannabis, and reefer. Celebs, along with many others are rolling joints, using marijuana vaporizer, hookah, traveling to pot shops, and endorsing the legalization of marijuana!
Concerning the debates regarding the status of marijuana, it's proven medicinal benefits, and the many states leaning toward legalization, or running for cover, the opinions will not end anytime soon. The pros and cons could fill the sky with more sparkle than the star-blanketed night! Whatever side of the fence you are on, there are legitimate claims that are logical, rational, and can certainly hold their own.
